It is in this context that Ecolab and AFNOR published this summer the &quot;General Framework for Frugal AI,&quot; a world first, which offers companies and organizations a concrete framework for developing more virtuous AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">A brief look back at frugal AI:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Frugal AI is an emerging concept<\/strong> aimed at developing and using models and <strong>more sustainable AI systems<\/strong>, more <strong>resource efficient<\/strong> and more <strong>environmentally friendly<\/strong>, while maintaining <strong>high performance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This involves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First and foremost, to demonstrate the necessity of using AI rather than another, less resource-intensive solution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To adopt good practices to reduce its environmental impact<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Questioning uses and needs to respond to current environmental and economic challenges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to evaluate and regulate this concept, a framework was necessary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Key takeaways regarding the framework for frugal AI:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AFNOR Spec 2314 standard is the <strong>the result of collaborative work <\/strong>involving around one hundred contributors from businesses, research institutions, associations and government departments. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afnor.org\/actualites\/referentiel-pour-mesurer-et-reduire-impact-environnemental-de-ia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"This document states\">This document states<\/a> \u201ccalculation methodologies and good practices to measure and reduce the environmental impact of AI, and to communicate with fair and verifiable claims\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Its aim is to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Provide a methodology for assessing impacts<\/strong>\u00a0Based on a life cycle analysis, it allows us to quantify the environmental footprint of an AI system on different impact categories (energy consumption, water consumption, CO2 emissions, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Identify best practices to reduce these impacts:<\/strong> 31 good practice sheets\u00a0<strong>: <\/strong>Covering the entire lifecycle of an AI (design, development, deployment, use), these concrete recommendations aim to reduce environmental impact at each stage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Share recommendations for transparent communication<\/strong>\u00a0: The framework provides a framework for communicating without greenwashing about the frugal nature of an AI service, allowing companies to differentiate themselves while avoiding the pitfalls of ecological overbidding.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>His target?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI producers and service providers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Companies that consume AI services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Civil society actors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Despite its innovative nature, the framework also raises questions and challenges:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Industry adoption<\/strong>\u00a0: Implementing these recommendations will require significant changes in current practices.
