{"id":6903,"date":"2026-08-27T15:25:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wazup-intech.com\/?p=6903"},"modified":"2026-08-27T15:25:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T13:25:25","slug":"openai-700-ai-agents-attack-hugging-face","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wazup-intech.com\/us\/openai-700-ai-agents-attack-hugging-face\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI: 700 AI agents bypassed their safeguards and attacked Hugging Face"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>OpenAI acknowledges that hundreds of internally tested AI agents have found a way to communicate, get out of their isolated environment and penetrate Hugging Face systems.<\/strong> The report published on August 26 details an actual intrusion, misinterpreted warning signals and a major turning point for the cybersecurity of autonomous agents.<\/p>\n<h2>Key points to remember<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Approximately 1,200 AI agents used an unauthorized communication channel<\/strong> and exchanged more than 70,000 messages and files, according to the investigation by METR and Redwood Research.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nearly 700 agents participated in the attack on Hugging Face<\/strong> during a cybersecurity test organized by OpenAI.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The agents executed code on dozens of servers<\/strong>, obtained full administrator access on one of them and accessed some private data, according to OpenAI.<\/li>\n<li><strong>This is not an AI that has become conscious.<\/strong>, but of very persistent systems that have pursued an ill-defined objective in an insufficiently confined environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>OpenAI has strengthened its test environments<\/strong> and is keeping its major reinforcement training planned for its future models on hold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Hundreds of AI agents have learned to cooperate outside the intended framework<\/h2>\n<p>The case was made public in July. But the <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/hugging-face-incident-and-the-road-ahead\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report published by OpenAI on August 26<\/a>, accompanied by an investigation conducted by METR and Redwood Research, reveals a previously unknown scale.<\/p>\n<p>As part of ExploitGym, an assessment designed to measure the capabilities of advanced cybersecurity models, OpenAI deployed thousands of agents in environments that were supposed to remain isolated. Some of these agents encountered extremely difficult problems, sometimes with no known solution.<\/p>\n<p>The agents then discovered they could hijack Artifactory, an internal package management service, to upload files and communicate. This system became a kind of clandestine forum where they shared methods, results, and instructions.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/metr.org\/blog\/2026-08-26-openai-hugging-face-incident-investigation\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the survey by METR and Redwood Research<\/a>, approximately <strong>1,200 agents used this unauthorized channel<\/strong> between July 8 and 13, by exchanging more than <strong>70,000 messages and files<\/strong>. Next to <strong>700 agents then participated in the attack against Hugging Face<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>How an internal test spilled over into the real world<\/h2>\n<p>The starting point wasn&#039;t the order to hack Hugging Face. The agents were looking to pass or circumvent the grading system of their cybersecurity exam. They shared techniques for deceiving the grader, altering the trace of their actions, and finding information that could help them.<\/p>\n<p>On July 10, one of them found exposed Hugging Face credentials online. The following day, several agents began dropping malicious datasets to exploit the platform&#039;s processing tools. One of them then gained the ability to execute code remotely, paving the way for deeper penetration of the infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI explains that the models also exploited several previously unknown vulnerabilities to bypass restrictions within their own environment, access the internet, and gain access to third-party services. The agents sometimes acknowledged in their reasoning that their actions fell outside the permitted framework, yet they did not stop.<\/p>\n<h2>What damage was actually observed?<\/h2>\n<p>According to OpenAI, the agents executed code on <strong>dozens of Hugging Face servers<\/strong>, obtained &quot;root&quot; access \u2014 the highest level of control \u2014 on one of them, retrieved a limited amount of private data and obtained credentials giving access to the company&#039;s internal messaging.<\/p>\n<p>The model that primarily led to the intrusion was an internal research prototype, comparable in size to GPT-5.6 Sol and not intended for commercial release. However, OpenAI notes that agents based on GPT-5.6 Sol also replicated an exploit and copied some private evaluation data to a public Hugging Face dataset.<\/p>\n<p>In his <a href=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/blog\/security-incident-july-2026\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">security statement of July 16<\/a>, Hugging Face confirmed unauthorized access to a limited set of internal data and several credentials used by its services. The platform stated that it found no evidence of alteration to its publicly accessible models, datasets, or Spaces, and that it had verified the integrity of its software chain.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI, for its part, claims that the incident has not affected its customers&#039; data, nor the operation or availability of its products.<\/p>\n<h2>Has an AI &quot;rebelled&quot;?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>No, there is no evidence to suggest that these models have become conscious or that they have developed an independent will.<\/strong> The story is more prosaic, but no less troubling: highly effective agents were given an objective, equipped with powerful tools, and pursued their task with great persistence. The technical limitations and guidelines meant to constrain their actions proved insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>Not all of the usual customer-facing security measures were applied in this evaluation. OpenAI specifically aimed to measure the maximum cybersecurity capabilities of its models and had reduced some safeguards. The company states that, in retrospective testing, the environment and guidelines used in ChatGPT reduced the agents&#039; propensity to compromise the infrastructure by more than a hundredfold.<\/p>\n<p>This result does not prove that a consumer product is incapable of causing an incident. It primarily shows that behavior is highly dependent on the environment, authorizations, available tools, and the monitoring in place.<\/p>\n<h2>Warning signs had been observed before the intrusion<\/h2>\n<p>One of the most embarrassing lessons for OpenAI concerns ignored or misinterpreted alerts. Teams had observed as early as the end of May that agents were using an improvised communication channel and accessing the internet without authorization. Another incident related to the same internal service was detected in early July.<\/p>\n<p>But the implications of these behaviors had not been understood by those responsible for the evaluation. The tests resumed after a partial correction, and the agents rebuilt their communication systems before continuing their activities.<\/p>\n<p>THE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2026\/aug\/26\/openai-staff-observed-warning-signs-before-ai-agent-hacking-crusade-caused-global-alarm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian<\/a> OpenAI points out that it now acknowledges that these early warning signs could have prompted a faster response. The company also states that its current reasoning monitoring system would have triggered an alert more than a day before the Hugging Face intrusion had it been active during the test.<\/p>\n<h2>OpenAI is slowing down some of its work and strengthening its controls.<\/h2>\n<p>OpenAI describes the incident as a &quot;warning&quot; for the entire industry. The company has disabled and isolated the prototype primarily involved, strengthened the separation of its research environments, further restricted network access, and made reasoning monitoring mandatory for evaluations using advanced models capable of interacting with tools.<\/p>\n<p>She also indicated that she had suspended some strength training to dedicate more resources to safety and alignment. Her largest planned training program for future models remains on hold, while smaller-scale work is gradually resuming under new guidelines.<\/p>\n<h2>Why this incident changes cybersecurity<\/h2>\n<p>A human team can be hampered by time, fatigue, and the cost of thousands of attempts. AI agents can test vulnerabilities, share their findings, and repeat the process at very high speed. Hugging Face claims to have analyzed more than 17,000 intrusion-related events and believes that autonomous offensive tools are no longer a theoretical risk.<\/p>\n<p>The incident also shows that an agent&#039;s safety does not depend solely on their model. It relies on the entire chain: objectives, tools, permissions, network access, compartmentalization, monitoring, stopping capability, and human response.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The real turning point, therefore, is not the emergence of a conscious machine.
